Welcome to Somerton

Chew Magna has a thriving close-knit community, shown through the large variety of clubs and societies that can be found in the village.

Somerton is as quintessentially Somerset as you can find, evoking the feelings of country life blended with impressive historical architecture. Somerton is an ancient settlement having originally given the area its name, and nowadays it’s a fine example of rural small town life in Somerset.

Packed with history and tradition, which is evident from the moment you set foot in the towns old centre point Cow Square, the town is conveniently walkable, perfect for those looking to explore and discover the rich history of the town. Start at the heart of Market Square in order to take in the town’s various landmarks and ancient buildings, before

making your way over to the unique octagonal tower church of St Michael. From here it’s a stones throw away to the famous Somerton Cow Square, with its impressive Edwardian water fountains from the late 17th century. Here you’ll find historic stone buildings, cobbled market spaces and outdoor café seating facing out into the centre of this charming town.

Drop by the old town hall to look at some of the finest works by local artists and crafts people. Somerton also hosts many family friendly events all year round, often taking place in and around the town hall. If you’re in search of fresh air and countryside you will find plenty of walks in and around Somerton which should soothe your thirst for adventure.

Did you know?

During WWII, Somerton was the target of four Luftwaffe bombs which were aimed at – and with great success – the Cow & Gate milk factory. The bombing raid killed nine people and injured a further 37. A memorial at the dairy site commemorates those killed.

From ancient times
Somerton can trace its roots back hundreds and hundreds of years, with the earliest written reference dating back to 733 – historically not a happy time for the town as the then King of Wessex lost Somerton to the King of Mercia.

During the Middle Ages Somerton was the capital of Wessex and it is for this reason that it lends its name to the county of Somerset.

The town returned to West Saxon royal control in the ninth century, and was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Sumertone’.

Time to party!
One of the absolute highlights of living in and around this splendid town is the annual Somerton Music & Arts Festival. Held in early July and spanning around 10 days, the festival is a feast for the senses with events such as music nights at our local hostelries, crafts, art and photography exhibitions, talks and walks.

And to top it off the widely adored Somerstock Music Festival takes place during the festival. Held on the Circus Field – just a short walk from the centre of town – the festival draws some amazing bands and musicians and is the absolutely perfect event for the whole family.
